Modeling & Sculpture/Portfolio Review Day

posted by Sharon on Friday November 9th 6:22pm

Tomorrow I am off to Portfolio Review Day at RIT.  Quite a few colleges attend this event, and I spent a lot of time putting some effort into my portfolio.  I am looking forward to feedback and constructive criticism the visiting colleges may offer.  I think this will be a valuable experience and I am quite sure it will be helpful in future endeavors, so I am pretty psyched about going (plus it doesn't hurt that it is just down the road from one of my favorite places- The Art Store- lol!).

This is the planar study of the head I just completed in Modeling & Sculpture class.  Pretty cool- one side is sort of like a boney skeleton head, and the other side resembles a skeleton with muscle on it.  It is to teach the structure, proportions, and features of the head.  It probably took me over a month to finish because all of the proportions and measurements had to be exact.

I am really happy with the way it turned out, so it was important to get some photos taken of it for the portfolio.  The teacher took the ones for my portfolio and he did a very nice job with them.  It is life size and formed out of plastilina (a non-hardening clay-like material).

At this time, the sculpted head is being prepared to make a mold, from which a plaster figure will be then made.  But this is how the head looks once the modeling is complete and prior to the mold being made.  After the mold is made, the planar study will be used to complete a head/bust of the live model, which will also be made into a mold and cast.

I took these pics myself and was in a hurry -the ones the professor took for the portfolio were much more professional looking.

I love gardening and add more gardens to our property every year, often trying new things. I am currently in college (again), this time going for my degree in fine arts. I am the mother of 5 and grandmother of 4 (so far). My husband is my best friend in the world. We have 3 little dogs (Romeo, Casanova, and Lancelot), and two cats (inherited from my daughter- I could never remember their names, so I have always called them Stripe and Gray). My favorite color is purple, I like mostly 60's and 70's music, and someday I would like to visit Cortona Italy.
