King Salmon Fishing: Willow, Alaska

Fishing for king in Alaska is a tricky business because you are limited in terms of where you can fish, when you can fish, and what you can fish with in regard to lures and hooks. We referred to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game and settled on Willow Creek and the Susitna River. [ed. note: Josh told me to tell you that we fished the confluence of the two rivers.]
I have never fished for anything bigger than a bass or a trout so this was a very new experience for me. The rods are HUGE! And the whole kit is so heavy my arm ached for another day or two. Josh was so excited he could barely contain himself. I thought I was going to kill someone ("someone") on the hour drive to Willow.

People warned us that king fishing would be "combat fishing" - I wasn't sure what that meant but I soon found out.

I think that Saturday was the last beautiful, sunny day we've seen here in Southcentral - I even got a tan!

I had so much fun watching Josh fish. He enjoys it so much - the $10 king tag on our fishing licenses was well worth the money.

It was a pretty slow day in the river, at least at our end. I had to take breaks now and again. Just me and the ADN.

Throughout the day a pair of bald eagles soared above us which was probably the highlight for me. They are so thrilling to watch.

Josh and I scored a big "zero" on the king front but there are plenty of salmon left and we're game to try again! Especially after seeing this guy haul one in as we left the river:

Get feed.

It's great that you are spending the time you have in Alaska exploring what it has to offer. Sounds like a lot of fun and that you have met a lot of people. I read your blog frequently. It has prompted me to start one of my own. Not as interesting but I find it useful to put down my thoughts. So how is it being so far away from home? I am going to be facing similar situation. I guess bloom where you are planted....
I love that profile of you standing at the shore with the fishing pole. Your legs look so long. You look tall in that picture!
Mom
Wow, yet another great set of photos! Mom and Dad came out to the house last night to help me (actually do it FOR me) hang mirrors. we were talking about the combat fishing and you've captured it perfectly! Great shots. I will be reading the blog with a whole new perspective now ... think Relay for Life photos ... sell, sell, sell! You are the best. And I'm convinced you are in the middle of God's country. Enjoy to the max.
