Ice Art '09 Update

posted by conebaby on Monday March 2nd 1:33pm

The multi-block carving competition continues this week.  In the meantime, Snowcones' coverage of the single-block competition appears in the Syracuse Post-Standard (Syracuse.com).  Last week Josh and I went over to watch the last hour of carving on the single block sculptures and we caught some footage of a team attaching a fish, fabricated separately from the main sculpture, to a large ice-bird.  It's eight minutes of video but it's pretty amazing to watch.

This is site 19 "Surfacing Kingfisher" by Junichi Nakamura and Suguru Kanbayashi from Japan and Canada, respectively.  Nakamura is a pretty famous ice sculptor.  I found this heartbreaking video on YouTube of one of his less-successful ice sculpting attempts:

Josh took some great stills of the same artists over the course of a couple of days.  Nakamura & Kanbayashi came in first; Stan & Chris placed in the top ten!

My husband and I recently moved from Alaska to New York to Houston. We're tired. Follow me on twitter http://twitter.com/snowcones. I enjoy writing, spending time outdoors, yoga, and my favorite drink is a dirty martini (thanks Grandpa V!). I live with my geologist husband and our yellow lab, Sandy.
