Lost in Translation

posted by Bryankees on Wednesday April 4th 11:52am

I saw this movie recently (I know, it's been out forever, but, as those of you with children understand, I don't have a lot of time to watch non animated, non child focused movies!) and there was a part that really struck home.

If you are not familiar with the movie, check out this imdb page with the plot summary.

So, the part that really hit home for me is set up as they were awake, again, in the middle of the night, talking.  Charlotte is looking to see if there is anything more to life and asks about Bob's children.  Here is the conversation...

Bob: It gets a whole lot more complicated when you have kids.
Charlotte: It's scary.
Bob: The most terrifying day of your life is the day the first one is born.
Charlotte: Nobody ever tells you that.
Bob: Your life, as you know it... is gone. Never to return. But they learn how to walk, and they learn how to talk... and you want to be with them. And they turn out to be the most delightful people you will ever meet in your life.
Charlotte: That's nice.

I thought that was a very succinct way to summarize the experience.  It's so true.

Broken down,

Bob: The most terrifying day of your life is the day the first one is born.

The moment my daughter was born, I realized what a total idiot I was.  People had been telling me for years, but just at that moment, I understood they were right! How unready I was for this whole ordeal.  Suddenly, stuff just instantly wasn't as important as it was the day before.  Everything in life took a step back, a step behind this new life that was created.  I never really knew unconditional love before that point.

Bob: Your life, as you know it... is gone. Never to return. But they learn how to walk, and they learn how to talk... and you want to be with them. And they turn out to be the most delightful people you will ever meet in your life.

I don't know if them being 'the most delightful people you will ever meet in your life' is a defense mechanism to keep us from eating our young, but it's absolutely true.  I marvel at how fast they grow, how fast they learn.  I keep telling friends that each age is the absolute best age so far.  My guess is I'll keep believing that until she's about 12 or 13.  My other guess is you need to have those first 12 or so years to prepare you for the next 5 or 6!

So the movie was good and the quote was great.  The movie is a little odd, but worth a watch if you haven't seen it yet.

Bye for now!

The first 12 years is what keeps us from eating our young when they hit the teen years.
