PETS OF THE WEEK 10-16-09
posted by Beverly Animal Shelter on Thursday October 15th 7:29pm
October may be Adopt-A-Dog month, but things are pretty slow at the Beverly Animal Shelter. Could it be the miserably cold weather we’ve had in October? A saturation of dogs in local families? What ever… Unfortunately, they don’t stop “making” dogs (or cats for that matter!). Those adorable little puppies reach adult size in 6 to 9 months and actually require work! Well, who would have thought that a living thing might require some work…? And for what? A game of fetch? A walk (or maybe a run) in the woods? A wagging tail on your arrival? Or, unquestioned love?
JASMINE

A medium sized black Lab/Retriever mix with just a touch of white around her mouth, chest and left hind leg, 4-year-old Jasmine is ready for a permanent commitment. Estimated to weigh 55 pounds, Jasmine is a real sweetie who loves to give kisses. Although not to cats. She would prefer to live in a home without cats. Jasmine is spayed and up to date on her vaccinations.
RUBY

Simply a gem of a brown-eyed beauty. Little Ruby could be a Wirelsh Terrier (i.e. a mix of the Welsh Terrier and Wire Fox Terrier) mix. A lot of words for someone who only weighs about 15 pounds! Black and tan Ruby is estimated to be 3 to 5 years old. A perfect little love, Ruby still is a Terrier and does require a daily walk and regular fur maintenance. Also, because of her size, she needs older, very respectful children. Ruby is spayed and up to date on her vaccinations.
ERNIE

Found as a stray in late September on Gravel Road, unclaimed Ernie appears to be a Heinz 57 mix. On the short side and resembling a Spitz or Shiba Inu with his curly tail, little black Ernie (with the ears of a lab) weighs around 25 pounds and is thought to be only 9 months to 1 year old. Ernie is a sweetie who is not a barker but manages to communicate in his own way. An active young man, Ernie would also require a daily walk. Ernie is neutered and up to date on his vaccinations.
LAST WEEK’S PETS - Only Maxine from last week’s unwanted black dogs now feels wanted with an adoption in the works. Trey, Shaker, Maxine’s playmate Bear, Dillon and Sigg remain hopefully waiting.
SHELTER NEWS -
Special thanks go out to Linda Felice of the Pug Rescue Group for finding hospice for Fatty Patty. Thank you so much.
Jenna’s building construction is progressing. Thanks go out to all the generous contributors, especially those of you who have purchased the doors and windows for the building! Each door and window will have a plaque, which will be purchased shortly, recognizing your generosity. Only $15,000 more is needed to complete the building. Are you aware that Dallyn plans to do Spay & Neuter Clinics on sight? Let’s get the building finished and put to good use before Winter sets in!!!
Get your costumes ready! The Annual Paws on Parade is coming! It will be held at the Beverly Animal Shelter (weather permitting) on Sunday, November 1st, from Noon to 4:00PM. Can’t find a costume for your furry friend? Check with Cindy at the Store (Schultz’s that is). She has many available!
Thanks go out to the generous supporters who continue to make the Beverly Animal Shelter viable.
The Beverly Animal Shelter is currently participating with the Auburn SPCA in the SOS - Shelter Outreach Service (aka Save Our Shelter from the overflow of unwanted animals) Discounted Spay and Neuter Clinics held in Auburn. Those people adopting Puppies and/or Kittens from the Shelter will be required at adoption to make their deposit to participate in this clinic. The NYS Spay/Neuter program is no longer available to residents in Seneca County. The SOS clinic is also open to members of the community who have not adopted from the Shelter. A reservation and deposit are required. Please contact the Shelter at 539-9357 for more information.
The Shelter is (as it usually is) in need of laundry (detergent and bleach) and cleaning supplies. Also needed are cat litter and paper towels, regular towels and blankets.
We have taken in quite a few stray dogs in recent weeks. Please, if you have lost your dog, do call the shelter. Do not wait for an advertisement of “found dog” to appear. UPDATE: The BAS online site will now have a list of 'found' pets. If you are missing a pet, please check the site.
The Beverly Animal Shelter is now collecting your old cell phones. When the Shelter sends the phones in, they receive a small donation in return.
BAS, in partnership with Seneca Humane Society, participates in the Purina Pets for Seniors program. Purina provides a partial adoption-fee rebate to anyone 60 or older who adopts a pet.
Please be a responsible pet owner. Spay and neuter your pets to prevent more unwanted animals. ONLY YOU can prevent the overflow of kittens that begins each Spring and carries on into the Fall.
