PETS OF THE WEEK 10-09-09

posted by Beverly Animal Shelter on Thursday October 8th 8:05pm

BLACK DOGS!  Every dog rescue organization knows which dog is least likely to be adopted.  The black dog.  It doesn’t matter how cute, how intelligent or how loving they are.  Just take a walk around the Beverly Animal Shelter and you will see the preponderance of black dogs in search of their forever home.  Can you open your heart to one of them?

TREY & SHAKER

10-9-09 Trey & Shaker

Each day one can’t help saying “Why haven’t they been adopted?”.
An unclaimed stray, Trey (aka Trailer) is a black shorthaired Terrier mix who is gracefully graying.  She’s a gentle lady who knows the sit command.  A patient, loving girl, Trey weighs in at a slender 35 pounds and would be happy to be your new forever friend.  She is up to date on her vaccinations and spayed.  Because Trey has been at the Shelter too long, Dallyn is willing to foster her out.
Also an unclaimed stray, Shaker was found on Route 96.  A happy and charming Rottweiler/Shepherd mix with bedroom brown eyes, who likes back, shoulder and under the ear rubs; Shaker is thought to be 2 to 3 years old and weighs around 55 to 60 pounds.  If you really want to win Shaker over, like any man, try going through his stomach - bring him a treat or two and soon you’ll be his new best friend!  Shaker is looking for a family with active children to keep him busy.  Shaker does not like to be penned up and may frighten some people.  In his heart, Shaker is a sweetheart who loves the people he knows.  He enjoys car rides almost as much as his chest rubs and treats.  Shaker is up to date on his vaccinations, neutered and eagerly waiting for a loving forever home.

MAXINE & BEAR

10-09-09 Maxine & Bear

Miss Maxine is just about 8 months of age and weighs approximately 35 to 40 pounds.  A Terrier/Retriever mix love, Maxine is mostly black with brown highlights in her fur and has a white stripe on her nose.  Akin to any human beginning its teenage years, Maxine is full of emotions.  Maxine is an exuberant youngun who is ready for PLAY, but she really needs the commitment to exercise, training and love.   Remember to provide your new family member with an introductory, as well as, a daily walk.  A slightly older and already trained companion dog would be also nice.  Maxine is spayed and up to date on her vaccinations.  Although Maxine’s littermate, tan Taz, was adopted way back in June, Maxine has found a new companion to play with at the Shelter, Bear.
Not a “bear” at all, but a sweet, medium to small Black Lab mix.  Estimated to be ten months old and weighing in at 30 to 35 pounds, Bear is a definite companion (to another young dog) dog.  Cute as can be with white under his chin and on the tips of his toes, right now Bear shares the play yard with Maxine.  They continue to get along fantastically!  If you are looking to make your family complete, Bear and Maxine would do the trick!  Bear is neutered and up to date on his vaccinations.

DILLON & SIGG

10-09-09 Dillon & Sigg

A very friendly and exuberant young Black Lab mix, thought to be 9 to 10 months old.  Miss Dillon considers herself to be a “Wal-Mart Special” where she was found as a stray a while ago.  Underweight at approximately 30 pounds, Dillon loves her treats but needs a family willing to commit to proper care, training and above all exercise.  Dillon did enjoy splashing in her kiddie pool on the hot summer days and now looks forward to playing with you and your family.  Dillon is spayed and up to date on her vaccinations.
One to two year old Sigg is a very special, possible Saluki (pronounced Sa-LOO-key) – the royal dog of Egypt.  Gentle, but active and alert – a natural athlete, Sigg requires daily exercise.  A natural hunter as well, it is recommended that he not live with other small animals such as guinea pigs or rabbits.  Sigg’s elongated, slim, greyhound like body is not made for roughhousing, so companion children need to be gentle and understanding.  Sigg is estimated to weigh 30 to 35 pounds, is neutered and up to date on his vaccinations.

LAST WEEK’S PETS  -  Last week’s cute companion canines, Brownie, Newman and Fred & Ginger are still waiting to begin their new life with you.

SHELTER NEWS  -
Jenna’s building construction is progressing.  Thanks go out to all the generous contributors, especially those of you who have purchased the doors and windows for the building! Each door and window will have a plaque, which will be purchased shortly, recognizing your generosity.  Only $15,000 more is needed to complete the building.  Are you aware that Dallyn plans to do Spay & Neuter Clinics on sight?   Let’s get the building finished and put to good use before Winter sets in!!!

Get your costumes ready!  The Annual Paws on Parade is coming!  It will be held at the Beverly Animal Shelter (weather permitting) on Sunday, November 1st, from Noon to 4:00PM.  Can’t find a costume for your furry friend?  Check with Cindy at the Store (Schultz’s that is).  She has many available!

Thanks go out to the generous supporters who continue to make the Beverly Animal Shelter viable.

The Beverly Animal Shelter is currently participating with the Auburn SPCA in the SOS - Shelter Outreach Service (aka Save Our Shelter from the overflow of unwanted animals) Discounted Spay and Neuter Clinics held in Auburn.  Those people adopting Puppies and/or Kittens from the Shelter will be required at adoption to make their deposit to participate in this clinic.  The NYS Spay/Neuter program is no longer available to residents in Seneca County.  The SOS clinic is also open to members of the community who have not adopted from the Shelter.  A reservation and deposit are required.  Please contact the Shelter at 539-9357 for more information.

The Shelter is (as it usually is) in need of laundry (detergent and bleach) and cleaning supplies.  Also needed are cat litter and paper towels, regular towels and blankets.

We have taken in quite a few stray dogs in recent weeks.  Please, if you have lost your dog, do call the shelter.  Do not wait for an advertisement of “found dog” to appear.  UPDATE: The BAS online site will now have a list of 'found' pets.  If you are missing a pet, please check the site.

The Beverly Animal Shelter is now collecting your old cell phones.  When the Shelter sends the phones in, they receive a small donation in return.

BAS, in partnership with Seneca Humane Society, participates in the Purina Pets for Seniors program.  Purina provides a partial adoption-fee rebate to anyone 60 or older who adopts a pet.

Please be a responsible pet owner.  Spay and neuter your pets to prevent more unwanted animals.  ONLY YOU can prevent the overflow of kittens that begins each Spring and carries on into the Fall.
