PETS OF THE WEEK 11-20-09

If you are not interested in adopting (or fostering) a Senior pet, how about making some needy pets’ holidays a bit happier? All the pets at the Beverly Animal Shelter are in need of loving homes. The approaching winter will soon be making life at the Shelter a bit harsher. All the pets in need of loving homes would certainly appreciate a forever home of their own!

DeLONG

With a tear in her eye, Delong [a possible purebred German Shorthaired Pointer (without papers of course) found in south Seneca County] asks, “Please take me home!” When beautiful, solid liver (the more appetizing but incorrect description might be chocolate) colored, DeLong was not claimed, she was brought to the Beverly Animal Shelter for a second chance. Sweet DeLong is estimated to be 2 years old and weighs about 35 to 40 pounds. She is not much of a barker, but DeLong does long for the active life. She hopes to find an equally active family with which to share her life. DeLong is up to date on her vaccinations and will be spayed before adoption. DeLong requires a home without birds or cats.

LESLEY

A handsome and shy young man, tri-color Lesley was brought to the BAS by the Joyful Rescue group. At only 10 months of age, it is believed Lesley has seen the rougher side of life. Weighing only about 30 to 35 pounds, Lesley resembles a miniature Border Collie/Shepherd mix. Comparable to any young man, Lesley needs regular daily exercise and understanding. He is up to date on his vaccinations and neutered. Lesley is accepting of cats but wary of other dogs.

JERSEY & SHAKER

One of the last of the dogs rescued last year from the hoarder in Tennessee, Gentleman Jersey, a white and chocolate “chubbs”, remains somewhat tentative with humans. He definitely would do better with a companion canine. Jersey, a Lab/Hound and maybe Beagle too mix, is now ready for fostering. After catching up on a few missed meals, chunky 48-pound Jersey could use some exercise. Actually, walking with your new pet canine is a great way for him/her to bond with you and the other canines in your household. Estimated to be 4 years old, Jersey is up to date on his vaccinations and neutered. An unclaimed stray, Shaker was found on Route 96. A happy and charming Rottweiler/Shepherd mix with bedroom brown eyes, who likes back, shoulder and under the ear rubs; Shaker is thought to be 2 to 3 years old and weighs around 55 pounds. If you really want to win Shaker over, like any man, try going through his stomach - bring him a treat or two and soon you’ll be his new best friend! Shaker is looking for a family with active children to keep him busy. Shaker does not like to be penned up and may frighten some people. In his heart, Shaker is a sweetheart who loves the people he knows. He enjoys car rides almost as much as his chest rubs and treats. Shaker is up to date on his vaccinations, neutered and eagerly waiting for a loving forever home.

LAST WEEK’S PETS - Sweet white Annie, from last week’s Seniors hoping to find a foster home, has found a foster home. Still patiently wishing and hoping are wonderful Tres’, and the charming and beautiful felines, Yeller, Peter, Amy and Fuzzer II.

SHELTER NEWS -Thanks go out to Dano’s Heuriger on Seneca Lake (located at 9564 Route 414 - just south of Lodi, NY) for taking the time to hold the Shalestone Winemaker Dinner to Benefit the Beverly Animal Shelter.

And we once more need to thank the Pedigree Foundation. BAS was the recipient again this year of a grant from the PEDIGREE Foundation via the Seneca Humane Society. A $656.00 grant was transferred to BAS to "help find loving forever homes for dogs." Whenever anyone purchases a PEDIGREE product, a donation is made to the Foundation to fund these grants.

Christmas is not that far away. Santa will visit the Beverly Animal Shelter on Sunday, December 6th from noon till 4:00 PM. Jamie Hughes, official photographer for BAS, will be there to take your pets’ picture with Santa. For a $5.00 contribution you will receive one 5 x 7 photo along with two 4 x 6 photos.

Jenna’s building construction is progressing. Thanks go out to all the generous contributors, especially those of you who have purchased the doors and windows for the building! Each door and window will have a plaque, which will be purchased shortly, recognizing your generosity. Only $15,000 more is needed to complete the building. Are you aware that Dallyn plans to do Spay & Neuter Clinics on sight? Let’s get the building finished and put to good use before Winter sets in!!!

Many thanks go out to the generous supporters who continue to make the Beverly Animal Shelter viable.

The Beverly Animal Shelter is currently participating with the Auburn SPCA in the SOS - Shelter Outreach Service (aka Save Our Shelter from the overflow of unwanted animals) Discounted Spay and Neuter Clinics held in Auburn. Those people adopting Puppies and/or Kittens from the Shelter will be required at adoption to make their deposit to participate in this clinic. The NYS Spay/Neuter program is no longer available to residents in Seneca County. The SOS clinic is also open to members of the community who have not adopted from the Shelter. A reservation and deposit are required. Please contact the Shelter at 539-9357 for more information.

The Shelter is (as it usually is) in need of laundry (detergent and bleach) and cleaning supplies. Also needed are cat litter and paper towels, regular towels and blankets.

We have taken in quite a few stray dogs in recent weeks. Please, if you have lost your dog, do call the shelter. Do not wait for an advertisement of “found dog” to appear. UPDATE: The BAS online site will now have a list of 'found' pets. If you are missing a pet, please check the site.

The Beverly Animal Shelter is now collecting your old cell phones. When the Shelter sends the phones in, they receive a small donation in return.

BAS, in partnership with Seneca Humane Society, participates in the Purina Pets for Seniors program. Purina provides a partial adoption-fee rebate to anyone 60 or older who adopts a pet.

Please be a responsible pet owner. Spay and neuter your pets to prevent more unwanted animals. ONLY YOU can prevent the overflow of kittens that begins each Spring and carries on into the Fall.

PETS OF THE WEEK 11-13-09

November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month. The Beverly Animal Shelter has a better idea – Foster a Senior. What is fostering? You take the animal home to a real house and a deserving animal is given time to be a human companion again. You might see a real change in their behavior. The barking or jumping dog at the Shelter may be quiet and reserved once in a home away from the constant activity of the Shelter. The quiet cat may become more outgoing in a home of its own. Who knows? This “test-drive” might become a permanent relationship. All of the following are available for Fostering.

TRES’ & ANNIE

An unclaimed stray, Tres’ (pronounced “tray”) is a black shorthaired Terrier mix who is gracefully graying. She’s a gentle lady who knows the sit command. A patient, loving girl who has been at the Shelter too long, Tres’ weighs in at a slender 35 pounds and would be happy to be your new forever friend. She is up to date on her vaccinations and spayed. Mostly white Annie is believed to be an Australian Shepherd mix. Although Annie loves children, she also does love to chase a cat or two. She is estimated to be 4 to 5 years old and weighs around 40 pounds. Annie is a lovable girl who misses the family atmosphere. She is housebroken, spayed and up to date on her vaccinations.

YELLER & PETER

Buff colored, longhaired, Yeller, a quiet boy who does not “yell”, has been at the Shelter since 2007. You may not see him when you visit there; shy Yeller spends his time hiding or spending time with the (human) ladies. With his exotic looking eyes and enchanting demeanor, 6 to 7 year old Yeller is sure to win your heart. He is neutered and up to date on his vaccinations.Handsome, red and white shorthaired, Peter, was found at the ARC back in December 2008. An older fellow, Peter would prefer to live in a less crowded household. Quite the “chubs”, Peter has a slight limp from his arthritis. Just a sweet old guy, Peter is neutered and up to date on his vaccinations.

AMY & FUZZER (II)

Although she is only about 2 years old, mostly white, diminutive Calico, Amy is hoping to be an “only cat”. Having lost an eye, she is frightened by other cats and needs a quiet home. Affectionate Amy is spayed and up to date on her vaccinations. Not pictured, beautiful shorthaired Calico, Splashes is over ten years old and eagerly hoping for a loving home in which to live out her final years. Not really sure how old Fuzzer (II) may be, but he is generally considered to be older than 5 years. Fuzzer is a big boy with hints of Maine Coon in his ancestry. His silky white fur with “Tiger” patches is medium to long, he has tufts of extra long fur in his ears and most of all, Fuzzer has the loving personality of the Maine Coon. He loves to be petted and held. Fuzzer(II) is up to date on his vaccinations and neutered.

LAST WEEK’S PETS - Last week’s leftovers, including sweet canine, Jasmine, and the felines, Nightshade, Bubbie, Lilac and Alex, remain waiting for their forever home. Ben is happy to announce he has an adoption in the works.

SHELTER NEWS -Special Thanks go out to the Auburn Home Depot for their assistance with Jenna’s building. Also, BAS is sending Special Thanks out to the Students from Hobart and William & Smith Colleges in Geneva for their outstanding cleanup of the Shelter in service to the community.

Sunday, November 15th, Dano’s Heuriger on Seneca Lake (located at 9564 Route 414 - just south of Lodi, NY) will be holding a Shalestone Winemaker Dinner to Benefit the Beverly Animal Shelter beginning at 5:00PM.
PETS OF THE WEEK 11-6-09

Beverly Animal Shelter Leftovers. Those black dogs who (you can’t believe) still haven’t been adopted. Then there are those loving, black feline, lucky charms. What do they have in common besides being “leftovers”? They are all the most affectionate pets you could find.

BEN & JASMINE

Charming, quiet, Black Lab mix, Ben arrived at the Shelter a few months ago with his Pomeranian companion after their owner took ill. While Ben’s small white companion has found a home, Ben still waits for his. A young man who loves his walks, Ben weighs about 60 pounds. He is all head with a smaller body and he could use a few extra pounds on his frame. Ben gets along with all. He is up to date on his vaccinations and will be neutered before adoption.A medium sized black Lab/Retriever mix with just a touch of white around her mouth, chest and left hind leg, 4-year-old Jasmine is ready for a permanent commitment. Estimated to weigh 55 pounds, Jasmine is a real sweetie who loves to give kisses. Although not to cats. She would prefer to live in a home without cats. Endearing Jasmine is spayed and up to date on her vaccinations.

NIGHTSHADE & BUBBIE

Nightshade, the plant, may have a dangerous reputation, while lovely petite Nightshade, the mother cat who along with her kittens was disposed of from a car, had a dangerous introduction to the Beverly Animal Shelter. The kittens are older now and the last few are also waiting for adoption. Less than one-year-old Nightshade is now free to find her own loving home. Mostly black with just a touch of white on her neck, belly and left hind foot, affectionate Nightshade is spayed and up to date on her vaccinations.Wearing his black and white tuxedo, young, handsome, silky Bubbie arrived with his sister, Sissy, a grey tiger who is also available for adoption. A low-keyed kind of guy, Bubbie knows he could improve the karma of any home. Just about one year old, he is neutered and up to date on his vaccinations.

LILAC & ALEX

Enchanting, shorthaired, black Lilac arrived with her equally black siblings, Alex and Theodore. Petite Lilac is pale green-eyed while yellow-eyed Alex is of average size. Estimated to be less than one year old, they are all “love bugs” in search of loving homes. They are up to date on their vaccinations and respectively spayed/neutered.

LAST WEEK’S PETS - Last week’s needy felines, Gimpy, Survivor, Crazy Bones, Gilligan, Willow and Patches remain patiently waiting for their new loving homes.

SHELTER NEWS -Thanks go out to all who participated in the Paws on Parade and congratulations to our winners.

PETS OF THE WEEK 10-30-09

It’s not too late to get the purrfect Halloween Treat! The Beverly Animal Shelter may have just who you need. On the other hand, BAS may have the purrfect cat who needs YOU! Please consider fostering one of the four needy felines or adopting one of our ladies.

GIMPY & SURVIVOR

- You might think you are watching the latest reality show or returnees from Iraq. No, they are simply two loving gentlemen in need of fostering. Black and white, longhaired Gimpy once was a handsome fellow. Last year, after his owner passed away, he was given to the Shelter. It was discovered that poor Gimpy not only had ear mites but tumors in his ear. Don’t be fooled by his limp, his head turned to one side and his missing ear. Nine-year-old Gimpy says he is a healthy, clean cat who eats well. Gimpy merely needs a gentle home where he will be loved for his personality, not his appearance. Gimpy is neutered and up to date on his vaccinations.Handsome Survivor, wearing a bright orange/red tuxedo with white booties, arrived missing one of his hind legs. That doesn’t stop him at all. He gets along just fine. More cuddly than playful, yellow-eyed Survivor is thought to be about 3 years old. This big friendly boy loves his humans, but would prefer a less crowded home without dogs. Survivor is neutered and up to date on his vaccinations.

CRAZY BONES & GILLIGAN

Thinking maybe Wild West or some deserted island? Nope, just a delicate lady and a man of the streets in need of fostering in quiet understanding homes. Crazy Bones is neither crazy nor boney. She is a refined girl who found herself at the Shelter after her owner recently passed away. With long gray fur and being declawed, CB says the Shelter is no place for a lady like herself! Her age? CB merely says she is older than 5 years. She is spayed and up to date on her vaccinations. Black and white shorthaired, with a black spot on his nose, charming Gilligan has been at the Shelter for about a year. Afraid of people when he arrived, he has grown to trust and love the people he knows. Thought to be about 4 to 5 years old, Gilligan is neutered and up to date on his vaccinations. Gilligan too, needs a quiet understanding home.

WILLOW & PATCHES

Lovely golden-eyed Willow was found this past Summer abandoned near Cayuga Lake with her matching orange and buff kittens. Estimated to be 1 to 2 years old, Willow is a sweet girl who was a wonderful Mom. She and her two remaining babies are available for adoption. Willow is up to date on her vaccinations and will be spayed before adoption. What happens to the Moms of those homeless kittens? They wait patiently for that loving home of their own. Beautiful green-eyed, mostly black, Calico Patches, with an orange streak on her nose, has been waiting since November 2007 for a home of her own. Estimated to be 4 to 5 years old, loving Patches awaits the human who will love her. Patches is spayed, up to date on her vaccinations, and available for adoption.

LAST WEEK’S PETS - Cocker Spaniel Delilah and Dachshund/Beagle Lucy have adoptions in the works. Schnauzers Sara and Tulip, who have become very outgoing and affectionate, and Cocker Spaniel Petunia are still waiting for fostering, while Annie is still waiting for adoption.

SHELTER NEWS - Get your costumes ready! The Annual Paws on Parade is almost HERE! PLEASE NOTE: IT HAS BEEN MOVED TO THE SENECA FALLS COMMUNITY CENTER on Sunday, November 1st, from Noon to 4:00PM. Can’t find a costume for your furry friend? Check with Cindy at the Store (Schultz’s that is). She has many available!

Jenna’s building construction is progressing. Thanks go out to all the generous contributors, especially those of you who have purchased the doors and windows for the building! Each door and window will have a plaque, which will be purchased shortly, recognizing your generosity. Only $15,000 more is needed to complete the building.
PETS OF THE WEEK 10-23-09

You’ve heard us talk about petfinder.com. They have a wonderful idea for the upcoming holidays… foster a shelter pet for the holidays. But why wait till the hustle and bustle of the holidays? The Beverly Animal Shelter has recently taken in (from a breeding facility) some sweet, purebred “producers” without papers, who are in need of special, one on one, tender loving care now that they have passed their prime. We are also featuring two lovely ladies whose adoptions did not work out and once again, they are looking for their perfect forever home.

SARA & TULIP

Two Schnauzer ladies weighing 20 to 25 pounds and estimated to be about 4 years old. The Shelter is currently caring for their dental problems and will have them spayed before placement. Quiet Sara with a poor quality “docking of the ears” is more outgoing. Tulip with longer ears is a typical Schnauzer “talker”. They are up to date on their vaccinations. If not fostered together, another “balanced” dog in the household would be a good companion.

DELILAH & PETUNIA

Thought to be 3 to 4 years old, smaller (approximately 20 pounds), cream colored Delilah and weighing approximately 25 pounds, buff/tan Petunia are two very frightened Cocker Spaniel girls. They are two gentle dogs who need the peace and quiet consistency of a home. Delilah and Petunia are up to date on their vaccinations and will be spayed before placement. Again, placement together or with a “balanced” dog would be helpful.

ANNIE & LUCY

Two ladies whose adoptions have fallen through. Mostly white Annie is believed to be an Australian Shepherd mix. Although Annie loves children, she does love to chase a cat or two as well. She is estimated to be 4 to 5 years old and weighs around 40 pounds. Annie is a lovable girl who misses the family atmosphere. She is housebroken, spayed and up to date on her vaccinations.Little Lucy is the perfect companion for an older person or couple. A three year old, reddish brown Dachshund/Beagle mix with adorable, sultry brown eyes, Lucy weighs all of 27 pounds. She is good with other animals and children. Lucy’s favorite pastime? Riding in cars! And she just loves attention and being someone’s very special little girl. Lucy is spayed and up to date on her vaccinations.

LAST WEEK’S PETS - Cute Ruby from last has been adopted. Black Jasmine and Ernie remain available.

SHELTER NEWS - Jenna’s building construction is progressing. Thanks go out to all the generous contributors, especially those of you who have purchased the doors and windows for the building! Get your costumes ready! The Annual Paws on Parade is coming! It will be held at the Beverly Animal Shelter (weather permitting) on Sunday, November 1st, from Noon to 4:00PM. Can’t find a costume for your furry friend? Check with Cindy at the Store (Schultz’s that is). She has many available!
